You made it; you survived another Iowan winter. If it felt milder than normal, it’s because it was. Unfortunately, while a mild winter might be easier on us, it’s easier on the insects, too. As temperatures begin to creep upward, so will the bug population. Are you ready to do something about it?

We’re Forecasting a Warmer than Usual March

The average March temperature in Des Moines hovers around 49F as the high, and 29 as the low. Yet, we’re forecasting a warmer than usual March, so you can expect more than a few days above 50 degrees.

Enjoy the weather; it’s always nice to finally be able to go outdoors and actually enjoy it. While spring weather isn’t always perfect, it’s eons above what we’ve been enduring for the last few months. However, bear in mind that just as you perk up when you see that the meteorologist is forecasting a high of 55, so will the mosquitos.

Mosquitos Only Need Temperatures of 50F or Above

Mosquitos are hardy critters. They’re the ultimate pests. They need very little from us; just a thimble full of water for their eggs, slightly warm temperatures (mosquitos will begin breeding and hatching on a 50-degree day), and a bit of our blood. That’s all!

So, before you get too excited about the warmer weather that this March will herald, think too about the bugs that can put a strain on your enjoyment. Mosquitos don’t need much time at all to be back in full swing, not even a cold snap will dent their populations. With that said, what can do you to mitigate your mosquito problem?

Don’t Let Mosquitoes Ruin Spring

Go out and buy that citronella if you feel so inclined. Sure—dawn a cute little bug repellent bracelet while you’re at it. If you’re feeling really motivated,

you could even buy a couple of hanging yeast traps. We’ll still be here when all of those things fail to stem the tide of mosquitos on your property.

When you call us for mosquito control, we’ll do a couple of key things:

  • Find and eliminate the mosquito’s ability to breed in standing water, while eliminating obvious sources of water on your property
  • Spray specially formulated insecticide to control the adult population

Our mosquito approach is long-term and two-pronged. We eliminate their ability to bite you by controlling the adult population, and we drastically slow or completely thwart their ability to breed. When you adhere to this process, you’d be surprised at how few mosquitos you’ll find on your property.

Mosquito Control Should Start Yesterday

Once the weather warms, the best time to control mosquitos is as soon as possible. In late March, your yard is probably already a breeding ground for mosquitos who take advantage of the moist ground and, when the wet April weather rolls around, they’ll have a field day.

With mosquitos, you need to be proactive. The sooner you work toward eliminating them, the easier it’ll be to actually make a dent in their population. You need to ambush—to sneak up on mosquitos before they’re ready. Take them by surprise and take them out before they can build their defenses. For mosquitos, it’s a simple numbers game, so our game is to reduce their numbers as quickly and drastically as possible.

Give us a call now and we can suggest a mosquito control system that is right for you. We suggest you do it sooner rather than later.
